Introduction
Editing is a broad area which can be broken down into copy editing, line editing, and proofreading.
- A copy editor ensures that grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation are correct, while fact checking the document and implementing a style guide.
- A line editor ensures that ‘line by line’ a document or a book is stylistically perfect.
- A proofreader ensures that grammar, spelling and punctuation are correct, and that there are no typographical errors.
While these are general definitions, the main difference between editing and proofreading is the amount of time spent on the text. Editing is a much longer process and often involves the ‘versioning’ of a document from the draft stage to the publication stage.
I also edit documents from a ‘Plain English’ perspective. ‘Plain English’ is a style of writing which presents information in an easy-to-read way, and is often used by government departments.
If you have a document which requires editing, please get in touch. After a quick chat I will be able to give you a quote.
